WP1: Testing the efficiency in removal of nutrients and pharmaceuticals from waste water

Within the WP1 the efficiency of constructed wetlands for various types of wastewater will be evaluated. In the Czech Republic, constructed wetlands for municipal sewage will be monitored in the Švihov drinking water reservoir watershed. Besides the treatment efficiency also the impact of discharged water on the receiving stream water quality will be assessed. The target parameters will be organics (COD, BOD5), suspended solids, nitrogen species, phosphorus and PPCP (pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products). In Norway, constructed wetlands for treatment of highway runoff, agricultural tile drainage and landfill leachate will be monitored in the Lake Gjersjøern watershed near Oslo.

Also within the task 1.3 The main objective will be to increase the efficiency of cleaning technologies for specific types of contamination to which current practices are ineffective. These are mainly pharmaceuticals, which are brought to the surface and then into the groundwater in the initial concentrations. In the laboratory TGM WRI, various technologies for elimination of pharmaceuticals from wastewater will be tested. As a test medium will directly use waste water treatment plant. Waste water after passing through the sand filter is cleaned by means of activated carbon. It will also be tested by the use of UV radiation and ozone application.
