WP2: Monitoring of waste water types, surface- and groundwater pollution in the catchment sites

The main objectives of WP2 are to quantify pollutant concentrations and loads in different runoff components and from various diffuse and point pollution sources – in small water courses and tile drainage. Different soil, land use and agricultural management conditions as well as waste water treatment manners will be considered. RISWC and BIOFORSK will be responsible for fulfilling this objective in CR and NOR, respectively.

Additionally, the WP2 activities will be focused to assess the effectiveness of current treatment technologies for waste waters containing PPCPs and the processes of natural attenuation of PPCPs in the rock environment. This task will be performed by the T. G. Masaryk Water Research Institute.

Tasks of WP2:

T 2.1. Monitoring of several types of wastewater (wastewater treatment plants – WWTP, sewerage outflows, soakaways from septic tanks) and related small water courses in the Želivka river basin (Švihov Reservoir).

In the CR, this will be based partly (about 30%) on data from Povodí Vltavy, State Enterprise (Vltava river basin administrator). This data will serve especially for modelling performed within the WP3.

T 2.2. Monitoring of two predominantly agricultural catchments with their subcatchments

Monitoring profiles will be located with a respect to a “submerged basin principle” to track the origin (source) and quantify the share of pollution. For tracking the source of origin, in particular human (mostly from waste water) and non-human (mostly form agriculture), a suite of sensitive host-specific quantitative real-time PCR assay will be applied. Monitoring and sampling of surface, tile drainage and groundwaters, monitoring of weather parameters. Soil survey, collecting of parameters needed for modelling. Survey of agricultural management, land use.

The monitoring campaigns of surface and tile drainage waters in CR and NOR will encompass regular as well as snap-shot sampling approaches both for water quality and quantity to catch the variability of pollutant concentrations/loads in surface and tile drainage waters. For water quality monitoring, automatic water samplers (ISCO or others) and electro-chemical probes will be used; for water quantity UV probes, calibrated weirs, pressure probes, automatic weather stations will be employed. Water quality parameters will be determined as follows: PO4– P, TP, NH4+ – N, NO2 – N, NO3– N, TN, COD and DOC. For all the experimental sites, water regime will be observed in detail, to describe water balance and water pollution in various times and gauge schedules and to model various scenarios of applied protective / mitigation measures.

 T 2.3. Effectiveness of PPCPs attenuation in groundwater in the Horni Beřkovice pilot site

This activity is focused on monitoring changes in concentrations of pharmaceuticals in groundwater.As a tool for such monitoring will be used entirely unique pilot site Horní Beřkovice allowing to study the penetration and spread of pharmaceuticals in the ecosystem and rock environment . The monitoring system is capable to detect the changes in concentrations from psychiatric hospital (source of contamination), through a wastewater treatment plant, the unsaturated zone, aquifer and finaly to wells that serve as source of drinking water
